The Tosa-Ken is an extraordinary dog, athletic and extremely agile in spite of its massive size. Appearing generally as a huge, very well built dog, it is most notable for its large head and broad chest. Males range between 90 to 200 pounds in weight, due to four different weight classes for breeding in Japan. Females may weigh anywhere from 100 to 160 pounds, though they appear to be larger because of their muscular frames.
When compared to other large dogs, the Tosa-Ken is clearly a superior breed. They will maintain their excellent fitness with a minimal amount of space and exercise. The Tosa-Ken will remain agile into their advanced years. They also live comparatively longer lives than dogs of there size and of other breeds. The Tosa-Inu from StoneWall regularly live as long as 10-15 years.
As a guardian, the Tosa-Ken is without equal. A natural-born fighter, it guards its territory (and its owners) with remarkable enthusiasm. It is important to stress that protection is inherent in the Tosa-Ken, it is not a trait developed through training. Though a quiet guardian, at 150 pounds the Tosa-Ken is an effective deterrent against any unwanted guest. The Tosa-Ken is also extremely intelligent, clean and has a very stable temperament. The Tosa-Ken will not display its territorial tendencies when not at home. While it is quick to show aggression towards another dog that is a threat, it will agreeably back down, if its owner wishes it. The Tosa-Ken is also a loyal pet, and gentle with children. It cannot be provoked by a child's teasing or sudden movements. Though as is the case with all large breeds, your pet should be supervised to avoid accidents due to rough play. Overall, the Tosa-Inu is a quiet, loyal pet, which in training will learn without heavy discipline.
If you are interested in acquiring a Tosa-Inu, please consider that it is advisable to secure only top working quality stock. As a breed, the Tosa-Ken is still only beginning to become a presence in the United States, and your dogs may well determine the appearance of the Tosa in the U.S. Also, after you have purchased a dog, we recommend that you keep in close contact with your breeder, to ensure that your line develops in a fashion that will allow the breed's original appearance and temperament to continue.
